What religion is Jonathan David?

Jonathan David is a Canadian professional footballer who is a practicing Christian, having been raised in a devout household by his Haitian parents. While he generally keeps his faith out of the intense public spotlight, he frequently attributes his career achievements to his religious beliefs and openly expresses his gratitude to God.

David has also spoken about the values that guide his life, recalling advice in a UEFA interview from his first coach, Hanny El-Magraby, who told him to always remain humble, respect others, and maintain strong character. This emphasis on humility and integrity perfectly aligns with the principles David has consistently displayed throughout his career.

Jonathan David plays as a forward for La Liga club Atlético Madrid, on loan from Serie A club Juventus and the Canada national team. He is a product of the Ottawa Internationals SC youth setup. In 2018, he moved to Europe to join Belgian club Gent before transferring to LOSC Lille in 2020 for a then-record Canadian transfer fee of €30 million, where he famously won the Ligue 1 title. After moving to Juventus on a free transfer in 2025, he joined Atlético Madrid on loan for the 2026–27 campaign.

David’s personal achievements include being named the CONCACAF Men’s Player of the Year, winning the Belgian Pro League top scorer award, and being a multi-time recipient of the Canada Soccer Men’s Player of the Year award. He has also represented Canada at various senior tournaments, most notably playing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 2024 Copa América, and starring at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Early life and education

Jonathan David was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Haitian immigrant parents Jean Hubert and Rose. He has a younger sibling. David was educated at École secondaire publique Louis-Riel. He played youth football with his local club, the Gloucester Dragons, as well as with the youth teams of the Ottawa Gloucester Hornets, Ottawa Internationals, and Gent.

Career

Jonathan David made his first-team debut for KAA Gent in August 2018 in a UEFA Europa League qualifying match, scoring the winning goal as a substitute. He finished the 2018–19 campaign with 14 goals across 43 total appearances and became the Belgian league’s co-top scorer in 2019–20 with 18 goals in 27 league matches before the season was suspended. Toward the beginning of the 2020–21 season, David completed a club-record transfer to LOSC Lille, where he scored 13 goals in 48 total appearances and helped propel the club to a historic Ligue 1 championship title. He followed this with 19 goals in 47 appearances during the 2021–22 season before recording consecutive 24-goal and 26-goal campaigns, eventually leaving Lille as a top 21st-century scorer with 87 Ligue 1 goals across 178 appearances.

In July 2025, David signed with Juventus on a free transfer, scoring on his competitive debut against Parma and finishing his single full season in Turin with 6 goals and 4 assists across 35 Serie A appearances. Following a brief appearance at the start of the 2026–27 season, David secured a high-profile loan move to Atlético Madrid in September 2026 and became the first Atlético player in 31 years to score in each of his first three La Liga matches.

International career

David began representing Canada on the Canada national under-15 team program in 2015. He moved up to the under-17 team in the lead-up to the 2017 CONCACAF U-17 Championship, where he notably scored a brace against Suriname in the group stage. In May 2018, he was called up to the Canadian under-21 team for the prestigious Toulon Tournament. David went on to decline an invitation to play for the United States under-20 team, having been born in New York City, before he was called up to the Canada senior squad for the first time in August 2018. He subsequently made his senior international debut on September 9, 2018, against the U.S. Virgin Islands, scoring twice and providing an assist in an 8–0 victory.

In 2019, David was named the male Canada Soccer Player of the Year after an outstanding breakout season. He played a pivotal role in helping qualify Canada for their historic return to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022, and in November 2024, he officially became his country’s all-time men’s leading goalscorer by surpassing Cyle Larin’s record.

After guiding Canada to a historic third-place finish at the 2024 Copa América and another deep run in the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, David was named the 2024–25 CONCACAF Men’s Player of the Year. In 2026, David helped Canada achieve their first-ever World Cup victory by scoring a historic hat-trick against Qatar, leading the co-hosts out of the group stage on the global stage.
