What religion is Leroy Sané?
Leroy Sané is a German professional footballer who has never publicly confirmed his specific religious beliefs, as he prefers to keep his personal and spiritual life private. Born to a Muslim father, former Senegalese international footballer Souleymane Sané, and a Christian mother, former German Olympic gymnast Regina Weber, his background has naturally led to curiosity among football followers.
The widespread online assumption that Sané practices Islam is primarily reinforced by his full name, Leroy Aziz Sané. The inclusion of “Aziz,” an Arabic name meaning “noble” or “beloved,” frequently leads databases and sports compilations to list him as Muslim. While he does not perform religious gestures on the pitch, he has occasionally embraced the cultural traditions of his background.
Leroy Sané plays as a winger for the Süper Lig club Galatasaray. He also plays for the German national team and previously played for Schalke 04, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City. Among his many career achievements, Sané won the 2017-18 Premier League with Man City and was voted PFA Young Player of the Year.
Salary and contracts
During his tenure with Schalke 04, Sané earned an estimated contract salary of £31,540 per week, totaling approximately £1.6 million annually. His high-profile transfer to Manchester City in August 2016 more than tripled his earnings, establishing a baseline wage of £95,000 per week, equivalent to £4.9 million per year.
In July 2020, Sané joined Bayern Munich for a reported upfront fee of €60 million, signing a contract worth £249,002 per week, or approximately £12.9 million per year. Prior to the expiration of his contract in June 2025, Bayern Munich offered a three-year extension until June 2028 at a reduced base salary of roughly €10 million per year. Although Sané publicly indicated a willingness to accept a salary reduction to remain in Munich, a final agreement was not reached.
Consequently, Sané departed Bayern Munich as a free agent in July 2025 to join Turkish Süper Lig club Galatasaray. At Galatasaray, he signed a contract guaranteeing a reported €173,076 per week, translating to approximately €9 million per year. Cumulatively, his total career earnings from professional playing contracts are estimated to exceed €80 million, which is further supplemented by a long-term commercial endorsement partnership with Adidas.
Early life
Leroy Aziz Sané was born on 11 January 1996 in Essen, Germany. He was born to a German mother and a Senegalese father. He has two brothers, named Kim and Sidi, both of whom also play in the youth systems of German clubs.
Career
Sané began his youth football development at age five in 2001, entering the academy of SG Wattenscheid 09, a former club of his father, Souleymane Sané. After a three-year spell, he developed through the youth ranks of both Schalke 04 and Bayer Leverkusen before returning to Schalke 04 in 2011. He signed his first professional contract with the club in 2014, making his senior Bundesliga debut on 20 April 2014 as a late substitute against VfB Stuttgart. He established himself as an elite young talent over the next two campaigns, compiling 11 goals and 7 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions for Schalke 04. In August 2016, Sané joined Premier League club Manchester City on a five-year contract for £46.5 million. In the 2017–18 season, he scored 10 goals and provided 15 assists in 32 Premier League appearances to help the club secure the Premier League title and earn the PFA Young Player of the Year award. He won a second successive Premier League title, an FA Cup, and two EFL Cups during his four-year tenure in Manchester. His time in England concluded after he sustained a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury during the 2019 FA Community Shield, limiting him to 135 total appearances and 39 goals before his subsequent return to Germany.
Sané then joined Bayern Munich in July 2020 for €60 million, making 223 appearances and scoring 61 goals with 55 assists across five seasons. He won four Bundesliga titles, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup during his time at the club. His final season in 2024–25 yielded 11 goals and five assists in 30 Bundesliga appearances before he departed as a free agent in the summer of 2025.
In June 2025, Sané joined Galatasaray on a free transfer, signing a three-season contract starting from July 1. In his debut season, Sané won the Süper Lig title with Galatasaray.
International career
Sané advanced through Germany’s international youth system, representing the under-19 and under-21 squads before earning his first senior international cap on 13 November 2015 during a friendly match against France. He was a member of the German squad that secured the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup title. Despite his controversial omission from the final 2018 FIFA World Cup squad by manager Joachim Löw, he re-established his position in the national side and was selected for UEFA Euro 2020, the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and UEFA Euro 2024. He was subsequently named by manager Julian Nagelsmann to Germany’s 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking his fourth appearance at a major international tournament. On 26 June 2026, during Germany’s final Group E fixture of the FIFA World Cup group stage, Sané opened the scoring two minutes into the first half. The strike marked his first career goal in a FIFA World Cup final tournament match.
Personal life
Sané is the son of Souleymane Sané, a former Senegalese international professional footballer who recorded over 100 career goals, and Regina Weber, a German rhythmic gymnast who won a bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Due to his parents’ backgrounds, Sané holds dual German and French citizenship and speaks both languages fluently.
Sané is in a long-term relationship with American model and influencer Candice Brook, with whom he shares a son.
