What religion is Dominik Szoboszlai?

Dominik Szoboszlai is a Hungarian professional footballer who is widely reported to be a Christian, specifically identified by several sports and media sources as a practicing Catholic. While fan communities and squad breakdown lists often categorize him as a Christian based on his Hungarian background, the Liverpool midfielder keeps his private beliefs personal and has not made any public statements regarding his religion.

Szoboszlai plays and serves as vice-captain for Premier League club Liverpool and captains the Hungary national team, and he previously played for FC Liefering, Red Bull Salzburg, and RB Leipzig. In 2020, Szoboszlai won the Austrian Bundesliga Player of the Season award, and in 2022, he was named the Hungarian Footballer of the Year. He made his senior debut for FC Liefering in 2017, and he became the most expensive Hungarian player in history when he transferred to RB Leipzig in January 2021. In July 2023, Szoboszlai signed a contract with Liverpool after they paid his €70 million release clause. He represented Hungary as team captain at the 2024 UEFA Euro, becoming the youngest captain in the tournament’s history.

Early life

Dominik Szoboszlai was born on October 25, 2000, in Székesfehérvár, Hungary, to Hungarian parents Zsolt and Zsanett Szoboszlai. His father was a former professional footballer who played in Hungary’s top flight and later in Austria’s lower leagues before transitioning into youth coaching. Szoboszlai played youth football with his local club Fehérvár FC (Videoton) as well as with the youth teams of Főnix Gold, MTK Budapest, and Red Bull Salzburg.

Club career

Szoboszlai made his senior professional debut on 21 July 2017 with FC Liefering, Red Bull Salzburg’s reserve club in the Austrian second division, recording an assist on his first appearance. Following his performances in the second tier, he was permanently promoted to Red Bull Salzburg’s first-team squad ahead of the 2018–19 season. During his tenure with Red Bull Salzburg, Szoboszlai won four consecutive Austrian Bundesliga titles and three Austrian Cups, completing domestic doubles in the 2018–19, 2019–20, and 2020–21 campaigns. RB Leipzig

On 17 December 2020, RB Leipzig announced the signing of Szoboszlai on a four-and-a-half-year contract running until June 2025. With a reported transfer fee of €20 million, he became the most expensive Hungarian footballer in history. He became eligible to play in January 2021, but a long-term adductor injury prevented him from making any appearances for the club during the remainder of the 2020–21 campaign.

Szoboszlai made his competitive debut for Leipzig on 7 August 2021 in a DFB-Pokal match against SV Sandhausen, scoring three minutes after coming off the bench. Across his full two-season playing tenure in Germany, Szoboszlai made 91 appearances in all competitions, recording 20 goals and 22 assists while helping Leipzig secure back-to-back DFB-Pokal titles in 2022 and 2023.

Liverpool

Liverpool triggered Szoboszlai’s release clause with RB Leipzig on 2 July 2023, paying a reported €70 million (£60 million) to set a new transfer record for a Hungarian player. He arrived at Anfield as part of a summer midfield overhaul alongside Alexis Mac Allister, joining a side managed by Jürgen Klopp.

He made his competitive debut on 13 August 2023, starting in a 1–1 Premier League away draw against Chelsea. On 3 September 2023, Szoboszlai scored his first goal for the club during a 3–0 victory over Aston Villa, striking a half-volley from the edge of the box in the third minute to become the first Hungarian player to score for Liverpool.

During his tenure at the club, Szoboszlai has won two major trophies: the EFL Cup in 2024 and the Premier League title in the 2024–25 season. His contribution helped Liverpool secure their 20th English top-flight championship, making him the first Hungarian player to win the Premier League.

International career

Szoboszlai progressed through Hungary’s youth teams from the under-17 to under-21 levels before making his senior debut in 2019. At 18 years and four months old, he became one of the youngest players to represent the national team.
