What religion is Elliot Anderson?
Elliot Anderson is an English professional footballer who has not publicly detailed his religious beliefs. While Anderson keeps his own religious affiliation private, reports regarding his family note that his late mother, Helen, possessed a deep faith, a strong love for God, and a belief in heaven. Following her passing after a battle with cancer, Anderson has frequently dedicated his on-field achievements to her memory, including celebrating a goal by pointing toward the heavens.
Elliot Anderson plays as a midfielder for Premier League club Manchester City as well as for the England national team. He began his senior career with his boyhood club Newcastle United before making a transfer to Nottingham Forest in 2024. In July 2026, following his participation in England’s third-place finish at the FIFA World Cup, Anderson completed a £116 million transfer from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City.
Outside of football, Anderson suffered a personal loss in April 2026 when his mother, Helen, passed away following a battle with cancer. He missed a Europa League fixture against Porto to attend her services and later shared a social media tribute dedicating his subsequent career achievements to her memory.
Early life
Elliot Junior Anderson was born on November 6, 2002, in Whitley Bay, England. He holds Scottish international eligibility through his paternal grandmother, and his maternal grandfather, Geoff Allen, played as a professional winger for Newcastle United during the 1960s. Anderson was educated at Valley Gardens Middle School and Whitley Bay High School.
Anderson joined Newcastle United at age eight, having previously played for Wallsend Boys Club. He signed his first professional contract with Newcastle in November 2019 and signed a further long-term deal a year later, on his eighteenth birthday.
Newcastle United
Anderson made his first-team debut on 9 January 2021, in a 2-0 FA Cup third-round defeat to Arsenal, and made his Premier League debut against the same opposition on 18 January, coming on as an 87th-minute substitute in a 3-0 loss. He was loaned to League Two side Bristol Rovers on 31 January 2022, helping the club win promotion back to League One, before returning to Newcastle for the following season.
Back at Newcastle, he signed a new long-term contract on 21 September and was awarded the club’s Jackie Milburn trophy that November. He made his first competitive start in a Carabao Cup win over Tranmere Rovers. He was a late substitute in the 2023 Carabao Cup final against Manchester United and was part of the Newcastle squad that finished runners-up in the 2022-23 EFL Cup.
He became a regular in the 2023-24 season but missed 25 matches with a back injury. Anderson left Newcastle in 2024, reportedly to aid Newcastle in their bid to avoid a possible points penalty due to a breach of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules (PSR).

Nottingham Forest
Anderson joined Nottingham Forest on 1 July 2024 for a reported £35 million. His performances helped Forest finish seventh in the Premier League that season, after the club had finished 17th the year before. His form continued into the following campaign. On 19 February 2026, he provided an assist in Forest’s 3-0 win over Fenerbahçe in the first leg of the Europa League play-offs.
The following month, Anderson recorded a vital contribution by scoring an equalizer to help Nottingham Forest secure a 2–2 draw against title contenders Manchester City. He maintained his consistent form down the final stretch of the domestic campaign. On May 10, 2026, he scored an 88th-minute equalizing goal to secure a 1–1 draw against his boyhood club, Newcastle United. He concluded his tenure with Nottingham Forest, having accumulated 92 appearances for the club across all competitions before finalizing a permanent move away in July 2026.
Manchester City
Manchester City completed the signing of Anderson from Nottingham Forest on July 23, 2026, after agreeing to a transfer fee of £116 million. He passed a medical at England’s World Cup training base in Kansas City, with the move formally completed once he returned from the tournament.
The transfer briefly made him the most expensive British player in history, surpassing the £115 million Real Madrid paid for Jude Bellingham in 2023, before he was overtaken days later by Morgan Rogers‘ £117 million move to Chelsea. It also stands as the second-most expensive incoming transfer in Premier League history behind Liverpool’s signings of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz. Anderson chose Manchester City over Manchester United and other interested clubs. He had been under contract at Forest until 2029 before the move.
International career
Anderson is of English and Scottish descent, with a paternal grandmother born in Glasgow, and represented Scotland as a youth international from the U16 through the U18 levels. In August 2023, Scotland manager Steve Clarke handed Anderson his first senior national team call-up for a Euro 2024 qualifier against Cyprus and a friendly against England.
He received his first England under-21 call-up roughly one year later, in August 2024. In June 2025, Anderson started and played the full match as the England under-21 squad defeated Germany after extra time in the final of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, for which he later earned a selection to the official tournament team. Ahead of his senior transition, he publicly clarified his international commitment by stating his direct alignment with the English national team setup.
He was given his first senior call-up by head coach Thomas Tuchel and made his England debut on August 29, 2025, starting against Andorra in a 2026 World Cup qualifier at Villa Park, lining up alongside Declan Rice and Eberechi Eze. He subsequently secured a place in the final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, starting all eight matches on the left side of midfield as England secured a third-place finish following a 6–4 victory over France.
Personal life
Anderson’s parents are Iain and Helen Anderson. He has two brothers, including elder brother Wil Anderson, who appeared on the eleventh series of Love Island. His maternal grandfather, Geoff Allen, played for Newcastle United between 1964 and 1968, a playing career that was cut short by injury.
