What religion is Haissem Hassan?
Haissem Hassan is an Egyptian professional footballer who has not publicly discussed his personal religious affiliation. He was born in Paris to an Egyptian father and a Tunisian mother, which ties his family roots to North Africa, a region with rich Islamic and Christian Coptic traditions. He has chosen to keep his personal faith entirely separate from his professional career.
Haissem Hassan plays as a right winger for Scottish Premiership club Celtic and the Egyptian national football team. Born in France, Hassan came through the academies of Paris FC and Châteauroux before Villarreal signed him in 2020. He subsequently had a series of Spanish loan spells with Mirandés and Sporting Gijón before a permanent move to Real Oviedo preceded his transfer to Celtic in August 2026, shortly after a breakout performance at the 2026 World Cup.
Early life
Haissem Yousry Fouad A. Hassan was born on February 8, 2002, in Paris, France, to an Egyptian father from Aswan and a Tunisian mother.
Hassan started his youth football journey at local club Porte de Bagnolet, playing there from 2008 to 2010. He then made a big move to join Paris FC’s academy. He spent seven successful years developing his skills with the club. In 2017, he changed teams to join the youth setup at Châteauroux to continue his training.
Club career
After one year with the youth team of Châteauroux, Hassan signed his first professional contract in June 2018 at the age of 16. He made his professional debut a few months later on October 19, 2018, in a 0–0 draw against his former youth team, Paris FC. In total, he played 17 games in Ligue 2 across two seasons before moving to Spain. On October 2, 2020, he was signed by Villarreal on a four-year contract. The Spanish club initially placed him in their reserve team, Villarreal B. He spent most of his time under contract away from the first team, going out on several loans to get more experience.
Hassan joined CD Mirandés on loan for the 2021–22 season. He later spent the 2023–24 season on loan at Sporting Gijón, where he played 42 games across LaLiga Hypermotion and the Copa del Rey. He scored two goals and made five assists during that run. By the time his loans ended, Hassan had played around 100 total matches in the Spanish second division.
Real Oviedo
Real Oviedo signed Hassan from Villarreal in August 2024 on a contract running until June 2027. Villarreal negotiated a 40% future capital gains clause, meaning they are owed 40% of any profit Oviedo makes on his next transfer fee. He started well by scoring four goals for the club during the 2024–25 season. His good form played a key role in helping Oviedo win promotion up to La Liga for the first time in 24 years.
During the 2025–26 La Liga season, Hassan played in all 38 league matches and made three assists. However, Oviedo finished near the bottom of the table and was relegated back to the Segunda División at the end of the year. This drop down to the lower division lowered his transfer market value and reduced the official release clause in his contract.
Celtic
On August 12, 2026, Celtic confirmed they signed Hassan from Real Oviedo in a potential £9 million move. He signed a four-year contract with an option to extend by a further 12 months. The transfer followed weeks of talks between the two clubs after Hassan’s great games for Egypt at the 2026 World Cup caught everyone’s eye. Villarreal will also get a part of the profit if Celtic sells him later due to a clause from his 2024 move.
Hassan will wear number 23 at Celtic, taking on the challenge of competing for titles and returning to the European stage.
Egypt national team
Hassan played for France’s youth teams at the under-17 and under-18 levels between 2018 and 2020. In March 2026, Hassan decided to switch his international allegiance to Egypt. He started for Egypt in their dramatic 3–2 loss against Argentina in the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and provided an assist during the match. His strong displays throughout the tournament earned him praise as one of the best breakthrough players.
Personal life
Haissem Hassan holds dual nationality of France and Egypt, born in Bagnolet, France, with parents of Egyptian and Tunisian descent, respectively.
