What religion is Yan Diomande?
Yan Diomande is an Ivorian professional footballer who is a practicing Muslim. He frequently speaks about his faith in Allah and how his upbringing in Africa shaped his belief in God. Diomande has shared in interviews that his guiding philosophy is to work hard, believe in himself, and leave the rest in God’s hands. Reflecting on his journey from Abidjan to top European clubs, he noted, “In Africa, we believe in God a lot, and I do as well.”
Yan Diomandé plays as a winger for La Liga club Real Madrid and the Ivory Coast national team. He began his professional career with Spanish side CD Leganés during the 2024–25 season before moving to German club RB Leipzig. Following a great 2025–26 season in Germany, where he scored 12 goals and made eight assists in league play, he was named the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season. On August 6, 2026, he officially transferred to Real Madrid on a seven-year contract for a club-record fee worth up to €140 million.
Early life
Yan Diomandé was born on November 14, 2006, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. He moved to the United States as a child and grew up in Florida, where he played soccer for Yulee High School. In 2022, he joined the DME Academy in Florida to improve his skills. He played so well that he was named the 2023 STARI Player of the Year. He also helped the academy’s partner team, AS Frenzi, stay undefeated and win the 2023 United Premier Soccer League title.
In October 2023, Diomandé went to Scotland for a trial with Rangers. He did not get a contract there, so he went back to the DME Academy. He finally signed his first professional contract in late November 2024, when he agreed to a deal with Spanish club CD Leganés.
Club career
Diomandé started out with the Leganés B team, playing in the lower leagues before working his way up to the first team. He made his debut for Leganes against Real Madrid on March 29, 2025, and scored his first goal against Espanyol on May 11. On the final day of the season, he helped his team with a goal and an assist in a 3–0 win against Real Valladolid. Despite his great form, Leganés was still relegated from La Liga. He finished his first spell with the senior team with two goals in 10 league games.

RB Leipzig
RB Leipzig signed Diomandé from Leganés on July 16, 2025, after paying his €20 million release clause. He signed a five-year contract that runs until June 2030. This move made him the first Ivorian player and just the sixth African player to ever play for the club. He scored his first goal for Leipzig in August 2025 during a 4–2 cup win against SV Sandhausen. He then scored his first Bundesliga goal later that October in a 6–0 win over Augsburg. On December 6, 2025, he scored a brilliant hat-trick in another 6–0 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt.
During his first Bundesliga season, Diomandé scored 12 goals and made nine assists in 33 games. His great form helped Leipzig qualify for the Champions League.
At the age of 19 years and 114 days, he became the fourth-youngest player in Bundesliga history to score 10 or more goals in a single season. These amazing games won him the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award. His great performances have now pushed his market value to around €90 million.
Real Madrid
On 6 August 2026, Real Madrid announced they signed Yan Diomandé from RB Leipzig. Spanish media reports that the deal is worth a club-record 140 million euros, including bonus clauses. Diomandé is the newest addition in a busy summer transfer window for Real Madrid. The Spanish giants have already signed Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, and Carlos Espí during this window.
This move also makes Diomandé the most expensive African football player in history. The transfer fee beats the £72 million that Arsenal paid Lille for fellow Ivory Coast winger Nicolas Pépé in 2019.
International career
Diomandé played for the Ivory Coast under-17 team in 2022 and later moved up to the under-23 side. He earned his first senior call-up in October 2025 and made his debut on October 10. He scored in his first two games as the team beat Seychelles and Kenya to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Before the World Cup started, he had played 14 times for the national team and scored three goals.
He made the final squad for the 2026 World Cup and played the whole match in a 1–0 opening win against Ecuador. He also became the youngest player to appear for his country at a World Cup at 19 years and 212 days. In the third match, Diomandé provided the 7th-minute assist for Nicolas Pépé in a 2–0 win over Curaçao. This victory helped the Ivory Coast move on to the round of 32 and also stands as the Ivory Coast’s first-ever qualification for the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup.
Personal life
Diomandé has stated that he looked up to players like Ronaldinho, Vinícius Júnior, Rafael Leão, and Kylian Mbappé, while explicitly naming Cristiano Ronaldo as his primary football idol.
