What religion is Ronald Araújo?

Ronald Araújo is an Uruguayan professional footballer who is a devout Christian. Specifically, he is a follower of the Methodist Church, a denomination within Protestantism.

In late 2025, while dealing with some mental health challenges, Araújo traveled to Israel for a spiritual retreat. He visited historic Christian sites in Jerusalem, Nazareth, and Bethlehem to reconnect with his faith and find peace. Araújo later said that because he is a Christian, he wanted to visit places with a lot of Christian history to reconnect with Jesus and his beliefs.

Ronald Araújo plays as a center-back for Liverpool, on loan from Barcelona and the Uruguay national team. He left Barcelona after winning three La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey, and three Spanish Super Cups and moved to Anfield to anchor the defense under Andoni Iraola. Considered one of the best defenders of his generation, Araújo is a former Barcelona club captain who has been named to the La Liga Team of the Season twice.

Early life

Ronald Federico Araújo da Silva was born on 7 March 1999 in Rivera, Uruguay, a city near the Brazilian border, to a Brazilian-Uruguayan father Celestino and a Brazilian mother Karina da Silva.

Araújo started his youth career at local club Huracán de Rivera. When he was young, he went for a trial with Peñarol’s youth academy in Montevideo but did not make the team. He returned to Huracán to continue his training, where he played strictly as an attacker. In 2015, he moved to Montevideo to join the youth academy at Rentistas, still playing as a forward. It was only after joining Rentistas that his coaches permanently moved him to central defense at age 17 due to his height, strength, and tactical awareness.

Club career

On 1 July 2016, Araújo was promoted to the first team of Rentistas. Two months later, on September 24, 2016, he made his senior debut as a substitute and subsequently became a regular starter during the 2017 season and scored a hat-trick in a 3–2 away win over Villa Española on 17 June of that year. In total, he played 17 games for Rentistas’ first team and scored seven goals.

On 28 July 2017, Araújo joined Primera División side Boston River. He made his debut for the club in September 2018, coming on as a substitute in a 1–0 win over El Tanque Sisley. He spent one season in Montevideo with the club. This move gave him vital experience in Uruguay’s top league before he moved to Europe.

Barcelona

On 29 August 2018, Barcelona signed Araújo from Boston River, initially assigned to the reserves in Segunda División B. His five-year contract included a €100 million buyout clause that doubled to €200 million when he moved up to the first team. He made his official debut in October 2019 during a La Liga match against Sevilla. He became a regular first-team player for the 2020–21 season, winning his first trophy when Barcelona lifted the Copa del Rey.

However, his time in Spain was regularly slowed down by injuries. He suffered a hamstring tear while playing for Uruguay in September 2021. A year later, a serious thigh muscle injury required surgery right before the 2022 World Cup, though he recovered just in time to travel with his national team.

Araújo was later named Barcelona captain. He helped the club win two La Liga titles and the Spanish Super Cup. His playing time dropped heavily under manager Hansi Flick during the 2025–26 season due to more injuries and tough competition for his spot. He started only 22 league matches over his final two years. In total, he played 213 games and scored 14 goals for Barcelona before his next move.

Loan to Liverpool

On 10 August 2026, Liverpool signed Araújo on a season-long loan from Barcelona with a £47.14m buy option. The English club made this move to handle a major defensive injury crisis amid Ibrahima Konaté leaving for Real Madrid.

International career

Ronald Araújo represented Uruguay at the youth level before debuting for the senior team in 2020, even scoring his first goal with the national team against Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification fifth round. Throughout his career, he has been part of Uruguay’s squad for the 2021 and 2024 Copa América, the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Personal life

Araújo married his longtime partner Abigail Olivera in July 2025. Together, they have two daughters.
