What religion is Brian Madjo?
Brian Madjo is an English professional footballer who is a Christian, though he generally keeps his personal beliefs and religious practices private.
Brian Madjo plays as a striker for Premier League club Aston Villa and represented Luxembourg in both youth and senior international matches before changing his FIFA association to his birth nation of England. He was signed by Aston Villa as a 17-year-old for an undisclosed fee, reported to be up to €12 million. Before this, Madjo previously played for French club Metz. On 12 August 2026, he became the youngest goalscorer in UEFA Super Cup history by scoring a volley on his competitive debut for Villa in a 2-1 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.
Early life
Brian Madjo was born on January 12, 2009, in Enfield, North London, England. His father, Guy Madjo, is a retired Cameroonian professional footballer who played for several English clubs like Bristol City, Port Vale, and Crawley Town. He has a twin brother named Bradley Madjo, who also plays football and has featured for Metz’s Under-17 side.
Madjo moved with his family to Luxembourg at a young age. He began his youth career at FC Marisca Mersch in Luxembourg before joining Racing FC Union Luxembourg in 2020. In December 2023, French club FC Metz signed him to their academy.
Metz
Madjo moved quickly through Metz’s youth ranks and scored 13 goals in 26 games for the under-19 team, with first-team manager Stephane Le Mignan promoting him to the senior squad. He signed his first professional contract with the French club in the summer of 2025.
On August 17, 2025, Madjo made his professional debut starting and playing 58 minutes in a 1–0 loss against Strasbourg. At just 16 years and 217 days old, this start made him the youngest debutant in Metz’s history. Madjo started the first two league matches of that season but played only rarely after that. He made just three more appearances as a substitute, with his last senior game for Metz coming in a 3–1 loss to Auxerre in December 2025. He also played for the club’s reserve team that November, scoring twice in a match against Neuilly-sur-Marne.
Aston Villa
Aston Villa signed Madjo from Metz on January 12, 2026, which was his 17th birthday. The club paid a reported fee of around €12 million, making him one of the most expensive 17-year-olds in football history. He signed a five-and-a-half-year contract that runs until June 2032.
The move was initially complicated by FIFA rules that stop international transfers for players under 18 years old. This was an issue because Madjo held Luxembourgish nationality. However, Villa argued he was exempt from the rule because of his English birth and British citizenship. On August 4, 2026, the Court of Arbitration for Sport officially backed Villa’s appeal. They ruled that his British birth and UK citizenship made him immediately eligible to play for the club in the 2026–27 season. Madjo has already impressed manager Unai Emery during preseason by scoring four goals, including two in Villa’s first friendly against Walsall.
Aston Villa handed Madjo his competitive debut in the 2026 UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain. This starting appearance made him the youngest player ever to start a UEFA Super Cup match. Brian Madjo scored an equalizer in the 45th minute, becoming the youngest scorer in the competition’s history after shrugging off a challenge from William Pacho. According to Opta data, this strike made him the youngest goalscorer in the history of the competition, breaking a record previously held by Dutch legend Patrick Kluivert.
International career
Madjo represented Luxembourg at the under-16 level in 2024 and was capped three times by Luxembourg’s senior national team in 2025. Born in London, he is also eligible to represent Cameroon. However, since his big transfer to Aston Villa, he has switched his international focus to England and has so far played nine matches and scored 4 goals for the England under-17 national team.
