What religion is Florian Wirtz?

Florian Wirtz is a German professional football player who keeps his religious beliefs private and has not made detailed public statements about his faith. The widespread rumors claiming he is Muslim stem entirely from a viral hallucination by Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok. In September 2025, a user asked Grok to list the religious affiliations of Premier League players, and the AI falsely grouped him into a list of Muslim footballers on social media. This error was subsequently picked up by sports content creators on TikTok and YouTube, creating a wave of false speculation.

In reality, Wirtz is a highly private individual who does not publicly discuss his faith or religious beliefs. The only confirmed contextual detail regarding religion in his personal life is that he has been in a long-term relationship with influencer Aaliyah Cloßen Mohamed, who is Muslim, whereas Wirtz himself is not.

Florian Wirtz plays as an attacking midfielder or left midfielder for Liverpool and the Germany national team. He rose through the academy of 1. FC Köln before moving to Bayer Leverkusen in January 2020. Wirtz played a starring role in Bayer Leverkusen’s historic unbeaten Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in the 2023-24 season and subsequently earned the Bundesliga Player of the Season award. In June 2025, Liverpool signed Wirtz for an initial £100 million, a fee that made him the most expensive player in British football history before his record was later surpassed by Alexander Isak.

Internationally, Wirtz became Germany’s youngest-ever goalscorer at the UEFA European Championship when he scored a goal against Scotland at UEFA Euro 2024. He also represented Germany at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Early life

Wirtz was born on 3 May 2003 in the Brauweiler district of Pulheim, North Rhine-Westphalia. He is the youngest of ten children in his family.

Wirtz began playing at Grün-Weiß Brauweiler before joining the academy of 1. FC Köln at age seven in 2010. He spent ten years with 1. FC Köln before later moving to nearby rivals Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayer Leverkusen

Wirtz made his first-team debut for Bayer Leverkusen in May 2020 in a Bundesliga match, starting against Werder Bremen. Early the next month, he scored his first career goal against Bayern Munich, becoming the youngest goalscorer in Bundesliga history at the time. At the end of the season, he featured in the DFB-Pokal final, which Leverkusen lost to Bayern Munich. Wirtz finished the 2019-20 season with one goal across 9 total appearances. He continued to establish himself as a top player over the subsequent seasons. In the 2020-21 season, Wirtz scored eight goals in 38 total appearances, extended his contract, and won the UEFA European Under-21 Championship with Germany. Despite suffering an ACL injury the following year, he earned an increased profile and returned strongly by the 2022-23 season.

Toward the beginning of his recovery comeback, Wirtz quickly reclaimed his spot in the lineup. He continued his success, leading Leverkusen deep into Europe, and finished the 2022-23 season with four goals in 25 total appearances. In the 2023-24 season, Wirtz played a pivotal role in Leverkusen’s historic, unbeaten domestic league and cup double.

A little over a month after key matches, he scored a hat-trick against Werder Bremen to seal the club’s first-ever Bundesliga title. In December, Wirtz hit peak form, and by May 2024, he was named the Bundesliga Player of the Season. Overall, he had 18 goals in 49 total appearances in 2023-24. The following season, Wirtz scored 16 goals in 45 appearances before sealing a club-record £116 million transfer to Liverpool.

Liverpool

Closing out his debut campaign, he completed the 2025-26 season with 49 appearances and 7 goals across all competitions.

National team career

Wirtz began representing Germany on the Germany national under-15 team in 2018. He moved up to the under-17 team in 2019 and, in 2019, played in the UEFA European Under-17 Championship. As part of the under-21 team, he helped Germany win the 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
