What religion is Serhou Guirassy?
Serhou Guirassy is a Guinean professional footballer who is a devout Muslim. He observes religious obligations such as fasting during Ramadan, abstaining from alcohol, and frequently sharing Islamic reminders and Quran recitations with his followers on social media. He has also performed Umrah, the sacred pilgrimage to Mecca.
Serhou Guirassy plays as a striker for Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund and the Guinea national team. He began his career at Laval before playing for Lille, 1. FC Köln, Amiens, and Rennes. In 2022, he joined the Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart before moving to Borussia Dortmund, where he became their top scorer in the league in his first two seasons with 38 goals in 63 matches. Among his other achievements, Guirassy became the Champions League top scorer in 2025 and won the Emirates Cup in 2026.
Early life
Guirassy was born on 12 March 1996 in Arles, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department of southern France, to Guinean parents who had settled in France. He grew up in a large household alongside four brothers and four sisters.
He began his youth career playing for local grassroots clubs USM Montargis and J3S Amilly. In 2011, Guirassy entered the youth academy of Stade Lavallois, where he developed through the club’s youth pipeline and reserve squad before transitioning into the senior first team.
Club career
Guirassy made his senior debut for Laval and spent two seasons in the club’s first team, from 2013 to 2015, scoring 6 goals in 33 Ligue 2 appearances. In July 2015, Ligue 1 club Lille signed Guirassy on a four-year contract for a reported transfer fee of approximately €1 million. He found first-team opportunities limited at Lille, making eight appearances without scoring, which prompted a January 2016 loan move to Ligue 2 side Auxerre, where he recorded 8 goals in 16 matches. In July 2016, Guirassy moved to Germany to join Bundesliga side 1. FC Köln, where he spent three seasons heavily disrupted by injuries, scoring 6 goals in 37 senior appearances across all competitions.
To secure regular minutes, Guirassy returned to France in January 2019, joining Amiens on an initial six-month loan that was made permanent that summer for a reported €6 million. He experienced a top-flight breakthrough with the club, scoring 10 goals in 24 Ligue 1 appearances. In August 2020, Rennes acquired the striker on a five-year contract for a reported fee of €15 million. Across a two-season tenure with the Brittany-based club, Guirassy registered 19 goals in 65 Ligue 1 matches, regularly contributing to their domestic campaigns and featuring in the UEFA Champions League.
VfB Stuttgart
In September 2022, Guirassy returned to Germany to join Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart on a season-long loan for the 2022–23 campaign. Following a productive initial year, the club activated their purchase option on 31 May 2023, signing him to a permanent three-year contract for a reported fee of €9 million.
His 2023–24 season emerged as one of the most prolific individual campaigns in modern German football history. Guirassy scored 28 Bundesliga goals in just 28 appearances, setting a new club record for a single campaign. He finished as the league’s second-highest goalscorer behind Harry Kane and helped Stuttgart qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 15 years. His individual performances earned him the Bundesliga Player of the Month awards for both September 2023 and March 2024, alongside an undisputed selection in the VDV and Bundesliga Team of the Season.

Borussia Dortmund
In July 2024, Borussia Dortmund signed Guirassy on a four-year contract after activating his €18 million release clause. He continued his scoring form immediately, finishing as the joint-top scorer of the 2024–25 UEFA Champions League with 13 goals to secure the competition’s Golden Boot.
On 22 February, he scored four goals in a 6-0 home win over Union Berlin, becoming only the third Dortmund player in the 21st century, after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Erling Haaland, to record a four-goal haul in a single Bundesliga match.
In the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, Guirassy scored a decisive brace during a 2–1 victory over Monterrey to secure Dortmund’s progression to the quarter-finals, where he scored again during a tight 3–2 defeat against Real Madrid.
On September 8, 2026, he scored a decisive brace for Borussia Dortmund in their 3-2 UEFA Champions League victory against Villarreal, a performance that saw him become the club’s second-highest all-time goalscorer in the competition.
International career
Guirassy represented France from the under-16 to under-20 levels as a youth international but chose to switch his international allegiance to Guinea, his parents’ home country. He made his senior international debut for the Guinea national team on 25 March 2022 during a friendly fixture against South Africa. He was subsequently selected for Guinea’s squad at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast.
During the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign, Guirassy finished as the second-highest goalscorer across the continent, netting six goals to trail only Morocco’s Brahim Díaz. Despite his prolific individual form, Guinea failed to qualify for the final tournament, marking the first time the national team had missed out on the Africa Cup of Nations finals since 2017.
Personal life
Guirassy is married to Assah Hayat, with whom he has three children.
