What religion is Bruno Guimarães?

Bruno Guimarães is a Brazilian professional footballer who is a devout Christian, and multiple sources specify that he identifies with the Catholic Christian faith. He regularly attributes his professional achievements on the pitch to God, frequently sharing faith-based messages and declaring, “I love You Jesus, thank You for everything!” following major milestones like international victories with the Brazil national football team.

Underscoring his deep religious roots, Guimarães married his wife, Ana Lidia Martins, in a June 2023 ceremony held directly at the foot of the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro.

Bruno Guimarães plays as a central midfielder for Premier League club Arsenal and the Brazil national team. Before moving to Newcastle, he played for French club Lyon and Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense. During his time with Newcastle, he set a club record by starting 68 consecutive Premier League matches. On the international stage, Bruno has played for Brazil since 2020 and recently started every match during their 2026 World Cup campaign.

Early life

Bruno Guimarães Rodrigues Moura was born on November 16, 1997, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His father, Dick, worked as a taxi driver, and his mother, Márcia, sold motorcycle parts to help support the family. Bruno also holds Spanish citizenship through his maternal grandfather, who moved from Spain to Brazil.

He started his youth career at Audax Rio. After playing well in a youth tournament in 2017, he moved up to the first team. However, he had already made his professional debut for the club much earlier at age 17 during a 2–1 away win against Bragantino in April 2015.

Club career

Guimarães joined Athletico Paranaense on loan in May 2017, starting out on their under-23 team. He made his first-team debut a month later as a substitute in a 1–0 away win against Atlético Goianiense. The club signed him permanently in March 2018. He went on to play over 100 games for the team and made the league’s Team of the Year in 2019. During his time there, he helped the club win three major trophies, including the Campeonato Paranaense, the Copa do Brasil, and the Copa Sudamericana.

In January 2020, Guimarães moved to France to sign for Lyon. He helped the club finish fourth in the league during his first season. Thanks to his great performances, he earned his very first call-up to the senior Brazil national team in October 2020. Later that summer, he played for Brazil’s under-23 team at the Tokyo Olympics and helped them win a gold medal.

Newcastle United

Newcastle United signed Guimarães from Lyon on January 30, 2022, for a fee of up to £40 million. The transfer happened while Newcastle was in the Premier League relegation zone under new ownership. He soon became a key player in the club’s rebuild under manager Eddie Howe. He helped Newcastle qualify for the Champions League and win the 2024–25 EFL Cup. People quickly noticed his impact, and he was named the North East Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year for the 2022–23 season.

Guimarães was later named Newcastle captain. He signed a contract extension in October 2023 that runs until 2028, with an option for one more year. In March 2025, he captained Newcastle to a 2–1 victory over Liverpool in the EFL Cup final. This win ended the club’s 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy. Before agreeing to a new move to Arsenal, he played 153 league matches for Newcastle, scoring 30 goals.

Arsenal

On 8 August 2026, Arsenal signed Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle in a £75m transfer. Guimaraes joins the Gunners on a four-year contract with a further one-year option.

International career

Guimarães played for Brazil’s under-23 team and helped them win a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. He made his first appearance for the senior Brazil team on November 17, 2020, in a 2–0 win against Uruguay. He was selected for Brazil’s squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and played in two matches. He has also played for Brazil in the Copa América.

Guimarães was part of Brazil’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, starting in every match. He had four assists during the tournament, with one against Morocco, two against Haiti, and the assist for the winning goal against Japan in the round of 32. This made him the leading assist provider at that stage before Brazil was eliminated by Norway in the round of 16.

Personal life

Guimarães is married to Ana Lídia Martins, and the couple has been together since 2019. They married in June 2023 in a ceremony held beneath the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. The couple has two sons, Matteo, born in October 2022, and Pietro, born in March 2024.
