What religion is Lamine Yamal?
Lamine Yamal is a Spanish professional footballer who is a practicing Muslim. Born to a Moroccan father, Mounir Nasraoui, Yamal was introduced to Islamic traditions from a young age. He has been explicitly open about his religious identity, publicly declaring to his followers on social media, “I am Muslim, alhamdulillah” (Praise be to God).
Yamal’s faith plays a visible role in his football career. He routinely performs Islamic rituals, such as making dua on the pitch before games and performing sujood to offer thanks after major achievements. This religious devotion directly shapes his lifestyle choices, as seen when he publicly confirmed on El Partidazo de COPE that his refusal to get any tattoos is strictly based on his Islamic beliefs. Furthermore, during his personal breaks, he has spoken about visiting mosques, sharing that they provide a sense of universal calm and unique inner peace for Muslims.
This commitment to his faith carries over into his professional career, making him a historic example of balancing athletic demands with religious obligations. He became the first Muslim player to actively fast during Ramadan while training and playing for the Spanish senior national team.
Yamal’s pride in his identity also translates into using his global platform to defend his faith against prejudice. Following an international friendly match against Egypt where sections of the crowd directed discriminatory chants at the pitch, Yamal took to social media to firmly condemn the behavior. He publicly addressed the intolerance, stating that using religion as a form of mockery is unacceptable, and called for an end to racism and ignorance within football. Through his vocal pride and open practice, Yamal stands as one of the most prominent young Muslim figures in modern European football.
Lamine Yamal plays as a right winger for FC Barcelona and the Spain national team. He broke through as a teenager to become one of the youngest players in the history of both Barcelona and Spanish football, and he has gone on to win the UEFA European Championship, multiple La Liga titles, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, all before turning 20.
Contracts & Salary
Yamal signed his first professional contract with Barcelona as a teenager, initially earning a modest salary in the range of a few million euros per year as he broke into the first team. In May 2025, ahead of his 18th birthday, Barcelona signed him to a new six-year contract running until 30 June 2031. The deal includes a release clause reported at €1 billion, the highest in the club’s history.
His base salary under the current agreement stands at approximately €16.6 million per year, which is roughly €320,000 per week, and can rise to €24.6 million annually when performance-related bonus triggers are met. The extension made him one of Barcelona’s top earners, sitting ahead of Frenkie de Jong and Raphinha in the club’s wage structure.
Endorsements
Despite his relatively modest playing salary compared to some senior stars, Yamal has built substantial wealth through endorsements. In early 2024 he signed a long-term partnership with Adidas, reportedly worth as much as $34 million over a decade, having previously been associated with Nike. He also holds endorsement deals with brands including Beats by Dre, OPPO, Powerade, Visa, American Eagle, and Konami’s eFootball series and serves as a UNICEF ambassador.
Forbes has estimated his total annual earnings, including both salary and endorsements, at more than $40 million, with the majority of that figure coming from sponsorships rather than his Barcelona wages.
