What religion is Carlos Espí?

Carlos Espí is a Spanish professional footballer who chooses to keep his religious beliefs private. Some people think he might be Christian because he goes to a Catholic university, but this has never been confirmed. He has simply never spoken about his faith in public.

Carlos Espí plays as a forward for La Liga club Real Madrid. He started his career in the youth academy at Levante in Valencia and subsequently broke into the first team in 2024. Espí became Levante’s top scorer during their return to La Liga before Real Madrid signed him in the summer of 2026.

Early life

Carlos Espí was born on July 24, 2005, in Tavernes de la Valldigna, a small coastal town in Valencia. He inherited his football roots from his maternal grandfather, Salvador Escrihuela Quiles, who played professionally for twenty years with clubs like Alzira and Granada. Salvador passed away at 70 on August 6, 2021, right when a 16-year-old Espí was starting to get noticed by youth coaches.

In a neat parallel, Espí began his youth career at local club UD Alzira, which is the exact same team where his grandfather began his professional journey. Levante’s academy later signed him in 2022.

Club career

Espí played for Levante’s youth team and helped them win a league championship. He moved up to Levante’s B team for the 2023–24 season and made his first-team debut on February 18, 2024, at age 18 in a match against Racing de Ferrol. The next year, he helped Levante win the second division title and return to La Liga, contributing six goals in 36 appearances during the promotion campaign.

His big breakthrough came during the 2025–26 season in the top league. He scored 11 goals in 13 starts, which included a great run of four goals in just three matches. He finished as the club’s top scorer with 13 goals in all competitions. These games won him the La Liga Player of the Month award for March 2026. He was also named the league’s Best Under-23 Player. Data showed he had the second-highest percentage of headed goals in the league, right behind Atlético Madrid’s Alexander Sørloth. In total, Espí played 66 games and scored 20 goals for Levante’s first team before his big move.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid signed Espí from Levante in the summer of 2026 after paying his €25 million release clause. The club completed the deal just hours after Gonzalo García left to join Fulham. Espí signed a five-year contract that runs until June 30, 2031. He joined the team to provide strong competition for the backup striker role. He will share those minutes with Endrick as they both play behind star forward Kylian Mbappé.

International career

Espí has represented Spain at the under-19 and under-20 levels.
