What religion is Patrick Dorgu?
Patrick Dorgu is a Danish professional football player who is a practicing Christian. His full Igbo middle name, Chinazaekpere, means “God answers prayers.”
Patrick Dorgu plays the position of a full-back, wing-back, or winger for Premier League club Manchester United and the Danish national team. Dorgu began his professional career at Lecce in 2023 before completing a £25 million transfer to Manchester United in early 2025. With United, Dorgu was nominated for the January 2026 Premier League Player of the Month award.
Early life
Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu was born on October 26, 2004, in Copenhagen, Denmark, to Nigerian parents Paul and Clara Dorgu. He has two brothers, Ifenna and Gabriel, both of whom also play football.
Dorgu began his youth career at local club Husum Boldklub before moving to Akademisk Boldklub. In 2018, he joined the youth academy of FC Nordsjælland at age 13. He moved quickly through Nordsjælland’s youth ranks and played for both their under-17 and under-19 teams. However, he left the club without ever making a match appearance for the senior first team.
Lecce
In July 2022, Dorgu joined Italian club Lecce on an initial loan spell to feature for their under-19 squad before the transfer was made permanent on 1 July 2023 for a reported fee of €200,000. Prior to the permanent move, he signed a contract extension in February 2023 to keep him at the club until 2027.
Dorgu was promoted to the senior first-team squad for the 2023–24 season. He made his official debut on August 13, 2023, playing in an Italian Cup match against Como, and later played his first Serie A league match one week later against Lazio. In February 2024, Dorgu scored his first senior professional goal to secure a 3–2 win over Fiorentina. He finished his debut senior season with 2 goals in 34 appearances as Lecce secured a 14th-place finish in Serie A.
Manchester United
On 2 February 2025, Manchester United signed Dorgu from Lecce for £25 million. The transfer includes another £4.1 million in future performance bonuses. He signed a long-term contract running until June 2030, and the club holds an option to extend the deal for one more year. In February 2025, Dorgu was handed his debut by manager Amorim in their FA Cup clash against Leicester City but was taken off at half-time. During his first partial season, he played 12 matches and helped United reach the Europa League semi-finals.
In the 2025–26 season, he scored a crucial goal on January 17, 2026, to help United win a 2–0 Manchester derby against Erling Haaland‘s Manchester City. Just eight days later, he scored again in a thrilling 3–2 victory over Arsenal. During the latter match, he sustained a hamstring injury that sidelined him for a projected ten weeks, with a return scheduled for April 2026. Prior to his injury, Dorgu had recorded 3 goals and 3 assists in 22 Premier League appearances.
International career
Dorgu made his senior international debut for Denmark on 5 September 2024 during a UEFA Nations League match against Switzerland. He came on as a late substitute and scored just 42 seconds later with his very first touch to help secure a 2–0 win. During the Nations League quarter-finals in March 2025, he recorded an assist for a Christian Eriksen goal.
During the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Dorgu scored goals against Belarus and Scotland. He finished the qualifying campaign with two goals in five matches. However, his bad hamstring injury in January 2026 put his fitness in serious doubt for Denmark’s crucial World Cup playoff matches that March. Denmark ultimately failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a play-off defeat, with Scotland securing the qualification berth from their path.
Personal life
Patrick Dorgu holds dual nationality for Denmark and Nigeria. He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, to Nigerian Igbo parents, giving him eligibility for both national teams before making his senior international debut for Denmark in 2024.
