What religion is Gonçalo Ramos?

Gonçalo Ramos is a Portuguese professional footballer who follows the Christian faith, specifically identifying as a Roman Catholic, though he keeps his personal religious beliefs mostly private. This aligns closely with his background, as he was born and raised in Olhão, Portugal, a country where Roman Catholicism is the predominant religion.

While Ramos is relatively private about his personal life and has not publicly detailed his religious beliefs in extensive media interviews, standard biographical profiles list his upbringing and background within the Christian tradition.

Gonçalo Ramos plays as a striker for Serie A club AC Milan and the Portugal national team. He came through Benfica’s youth academy, where he spent two years playing for Benfica B before getting a promotion to the first team in 2020. He won the league title in 2023 with Benfica, and in January 2024, he transferred to Paris Saint-Germain for €65 million. Over his three seasons with PSG, he won 12 trophies, including back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles. In 2026, Ramos signed a €74 million contract with AC Milan, breaking the record Milan paid for Rafael Leão in 2019. Additionally, Ramos represented Portugal at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 2024, and 2026 World Cup.

Early life

Born on 20 June 2001 in Olhão, Algarve, Portugal, Ramos is the son of Manuel Ramos, a former professional footballer. Ramos began his youth development with local club Olhanense in 2009, followed by a brief period at Loulé. When he was 12 years old, he went on a trial with Sporting CP. However, the club turned him down due to worries about his physical build. He subsequently entered the youth academy of Benfica in 2013.

Benfica

Gonçalo Ramos made his debut for Benfica B during the 2019–20 season at just 17 years old. He played in Portugal’s second division and finished that same season as the top scorer in the UEFA Youth League. He made his official senior first-team debut for Benfica in July 2020 and made an instant impact by scoring two goals within minutes of coming on as a substitute.

He scored his first UEFA Champions League goal on 13 April 2022 during the second leg of a quarter-final fixture against Liverpool. Ramos went on to make 106 appearances across all competitions for Benfica’s senior side, scoring 41 goals, and played a central role in the club’s 2022–23 Primeira Liga title victory, which marked their first league championship in four years.

Paris Saint-Germain

In August 2023, Paris Saint-Germain signed Ramos from Benfica on an initial season-long loan with a mandatory purchase obligation. The permanent transfer clause was activated in the summer of 2024 for a reported total fee of approximately €65 million, with the player signing a contract running until June 2028.

Across his three-season tenure in Paris, Ramos made 131 appearances across all competitions and recorded 45 goals. During this period, he helped the club win three Ligue 1 titles, two Coupe de France trophies, three Trophée des Champions, two UEFA Champions League titles, one UEFA Super Cup, and one FIFA Intercontinental Cup. His contributions included assisting the club in securing a domestic treble during the 2023–24 campaign and scoring a hat-trick against Montpellier in Ligue 1, alongside an additional hat-trick during the 2024–25 Coupe de France.

AC Milan

On 30 June 2026, AC Milan completed the signing of Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain on a five-year contract. The transfer fee was reported at €74 million, which includes future performance bonuses. This deal officially makes Ramos the most expensive signing in the history of AC Milan and surpasses the previous record of €49.5 million paid for Rafael Leão in 2019.

International career

Gonçalo Ramos played for Portugal’s youth teams early in his career. He helped the under-19 side finish as runners-up at the 2019 European Championship and also reached the under-21 European Championship final in 2021. He made his senior international debut against Nigeria on 17 November 2022, with a goal and an assist.

Later that year, Manager Fernando Santos named him in the World Cup squad to go to Qatar, and he caught the eye notably with a hat-trick against Switzerland in the Round of 16. In doing so, he became the first player to score a hat-trick on a full World Cup debut since Miroslav Klose in 2002. He has since represented Portugal at two FIFA World Cup tournaments and contributed to the national team’s UEFA Nations League title victory during the 2024–25 campaign.

Personal life

Ramos and his wife, Margarida Amaral Domingues, joyfully welcomed their first child, Bernardo, in June 2025. In addition to his native Portuguese, Ramos is fluent in French.
