What religion is Ousmane Dembélé?
Ousmane Dembélé is a French professional footballer who is a practicing Muslim, having been raised in a household with deep Islamic ties by his Malian father and Mauritanian-Senegalese mother. While he is a reserved person who rarely speaks publicly about his faith in press interviews, his commitment to Islam is documented through his personal life, actions, and cultural identity.
Dembélé’s commitment to Islam is deeply integrated into both his personal lifestyle and his connection to his roots. In accordance with his religious convictions, Dembélé strictly adheres to Islamic dietary laws, maintaining a halal diet and abstaining entirely from alcohol consumption. Even while competing at the highest levels of European football, he consistently observes fasting during the holy month of Ramadan on intensive training and match days. He also regularly uses his platform to share messages with his followers during major Islamic holidays, such as Eid.
His commitment to Islam also manifests through significant religious philanthropy. Following France’s victory at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Dembélé donated his entire tournament bonus to finance the construction of a mosque in Diaguily, Mauritania. His dedication to traditional Islamic values was also reflected in his December 2021 marriage to Rima Edbouche, which was celebrated in a private, traditional Muslim ceremony.
His blend of high-profile sporting success and quiet spiritual commitment has earned him widespread recognition within the global Muslim community, notably being celebrated as the third Muslim footballer to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or.
Dembélé plays as a forward for Paris Saint-Germain and the France national team. He came through Rennes’ academy before a rapid rise took him to Borussia Dortmund, then to Barcelona in a deal that made him one of the most expensive players in football history, and finally to Paris Saint-Germain in 2023. He won the UEFA Champions League with PSG in 2025 and was awarded the Ballon d’Or that same year. He was also part of the France squad that won the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Early life
Masour Ousmane Dembélé was born on May 15, 1997, in Vernon, Normandy, France, to a father of Malian descent and a mother of Mauritanian and Senegalese descent.
Dembélé began playing football at a young club, Madeleine Évreux, before moving on to Évreux FC 27. In 2010, at age 13, he joined the youth academy of Stade Rennais, a move that required relocating away from his family to Brittany. He progressed steadily through Rennes’ academy, joining the club’s reserve team in 2014 before being promoted to the senior squad the following year.
Club career
Dembélé made his professional debut for Rennes’ first team on 6 November 2015, coming off the bench in the final minutes of a Ligue 1 match against Angers. He went on to establish himself as a first-team regular during the 2015-16 season, scoring 12 goals in 26 Ligue 1 appearances that year and quickly attracting interest from clubs across Europe.
Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund signed Dembélé from Rennes in the summer of 2016 for an initial reported fee of around €15 million. He became an instant sensation in Germany, featuring in Dortmund’s run to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. His individual performances earned him the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award alongside a selection to the Bundesliga Team of the Season, concluding his time at the club with six goals across 32 league appearances.
Barcelona
Barcelona signed Dembélé from Dortmund in August 2017, arriving as the club’s answer to Neymar’s departure for PSG. The deal was initially reported at €105 million, with add-ons that ultimately pushed the total fee paid to Dortmund to €148 million. The deal made him one of the most expensive transfers in football history at the time. He signed a five-year contract that included a reported release clause of €400 million.
His time at Barcelona was marked by significant promise alongside persistent injury problems. He made 185 appearances for the club across six seasons, scoring 40 goals and providing 43 assists, but missed 141 matches due to injuries and fitness issues during that same period. Despite the setbacks, he won seven trophies with Barcelona, including three La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey titles, and two Spanish Super Cups, playing a significant role in the club’s La Liga triumph in the 2022-23 season.

Paris Saint-Germain
Dembélé left Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain in August 2023, with PSG paying a reported €50 million, activating a release clause in his contract. The move reunited him with his friend Kylian Mbappé for a season before Mbappé’s own departure to Real Madrid. Under manager Luis Enrique, Dembélé transformed into PSG’s central attacking figure, becoming what Enrique described as the team’s talisman.
His breakout campaign came in the 2024-25 season, when he scored 35 goals and recorded 14 assists across all competitions, helping PSG win an unprecedented quintuple that included the Ligue 1 title, the French Cup, the French Super Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and, most significantly, PSG’s first-ever UEFA Champions League title, secured with a 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the final in Munich. For his performances that season, Dembélé was awarded the 2025 Ballon d’Or, becoming the sixth French player to win the award. He subsequently helped the club retain their European crown during the 2025–26 season, converting a penalty in the Champions League final victory over Arsenal in Budapest.
International career
Dembélé represented France at various youth levels before making his senior international debut in September 2016. He was part of the France squad that won the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, and he has continued to be a regular feature under manager Didier Deschamps since, representing France at UEFA Euro 2020, the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where France finished as runners-up, and UEFA Euro 2024. He entered the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the reigning Ballon d’Or winner, playing in his third World Cup for France.
Personal life
Dembélé married Rima Edbouche, who is of Moroccan descent, in a traditional Moroccan ceremony in December 2021, and the couple welcomed a daughter the following year.
In his philanthropic endeavors, Dembélé donated €100,000 to his formative youth club, Évreux FC 27, when the French side faced severe financial distress and potential point deductions. He subsequently directed an additional €100,000 donation to his ancestral village of Wally Diantang in southern Mauritania. The funds, delivered by his uncle Sileye Dembélé, support local community and sanitation development.
