What religion is Viktor Gyökeres?

Viktor Gyökeres is a Swedish professional footballer who has never publicly discussed his specific religious beliefs, meaning his faith remains unconfirmed. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, he has paternal Hungarian heritage, which ties his family roots to regions with deep history in Swedish Lutheranism and Hungarian Christian traditions; however, he has never indicated whether he practices a specific faith.

Some football followers have speculated about a religious context surrounding his signature “mask” goal celebration, where he interlaces his fingers over his mouth. Gyökeres has since clarified that the gesture carries no religious or spiritual meaning, confirming instead that it was inspired by the fictional character Bane from DC Comics.

Viktor Gyökeres plays the position of center forward for Arsenal of the English Premier League and also for the Swedish national team. Gyökeres is known for his elite goal-scoring, explosive pace, and physical, high-pressing style of play. He began his senior career with the Swedish club IF Brommapojkarna during the 2015–17 season. When he signed with Arsenal in July 2025, Gyökeres entered into a five-year contract. His contract with Brommapojkarna included a €1 million release clause, and Arsenal surpassed that amount, paying €63.5 million.

Early life

Viktor Gyökeres was born on 4 June 1998, in Stockholm, Sweden. He began his youth football career with IFK Aspudden-Tellus in 2004. In February 2013, 14-year-old Gyökeres was discovered by Brommapojkarna and began playing on their youth squad and made his senior debut two years later. His father, Stefan Gyökeres, played football for IFK Östersund and Stugun in the 1980s and 1990s.

Club career

Gyökeres’s early professional career included successive loan spells to secure regular senior minutes. He completed temporary stints with German 2. Bundesliga side St. Pauli, alongside English teams Swansea City and Coventry City. This tough run ultimately laid the vital foundation for his massive breakout into a top striker later in his career.

Coventry City

Gyökeres returned to Coventry City on a permanent transfer ahead of the 2021–22 season, signing a three-year contract. He established himself as the club’s primary attacking threat, recording 17 goals in 45 EFL Championship appearances during that campaign.

During the subsequent 2022–23 season, Gyökeres was named the EFL Championship Player of the Month for November after scoring four goals in four matches to lead Coventry City to four consecutive victories. He concluded the campaign with 21 goals in 46 league appearances, finishing as the second-highest goalscorer in the Championship.

Sporting CP

On 13 July 2023, Sporting CP signed Gyökeres from Coventry City for a reported club-record fee of €20 million, with an additional €4 million structured in performance-related add-ons. A month later, on 12 August, he made his debut for the club, starting and scoring twice in a 3–2 league victory at home to Vizela. Throughout his two-season tenure at the Estádio José Alvalade, Gyökeres helped Sporting CP secure back-to-back Primeira Liga titles in 2024 and 2025.

His individual performances earned him consecutive Liga Portugal Player of the Season awards. His 2024–25 campaign proved exceptionally productive, as he recorded 54 goals and 18 assists across all competitions, a return that secured him the 2025 Gerd Müller Trophy as Europe’s highest-scoring footballer.

Arsenal

In July 2025, Arsenal completed the signing of Gyökeres from Sporting CP for an initial fee of £55 million, potentially rising to £63.5 million with add-ons. Upon his arrival at the Emirates Stadium, he was assigned the iconic number 14 shirt. Despite facing periods of intense external scrutiny regarding his link-up play and adjustment to English football, Gyökeres concluded his debut 2025–26 campaign as the club’s top scorer, recording 21 goals in 55 appearances across all competitions.

With Arsenal, Gyökeres has won the 2025–26 Premier League title and the 2026 FA Community Shield.

Sweden national team

On 8 January 2019, Gyökeres made his senior international debut for Sweden in a 1–0 loss against Finland. In October 2021, he was called up to the squad to replace Zlatan Ibrahimović for crucial FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures against Kosovo and Greece. During the 2024–25 international calendar, he recorded a record nine goals in six UEFA Nations League matches to secure Sweden’s promotion to League B, a run highlighted by a four-goal performance during a 6–0 home victory over Azerbaijan that marked his first international hat-trick.

Sweden coach Graham Potter named Gyökeres to Sweden’s 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. He was instrumental during the European play-offs in March 2026, scoring a hat-trick in the semi-final against Ukraine before netting a late winning goal in a 3–2 victory over Poland to secure Sweden’s qualification. At the final tournament, Gyökeres partnered with Alexander Isak to lead the Swedish frontline, notably scoring during a 5–1 group-stage victory against Tunisia before the team’s campaign concluded in a 3–0 round of 32 defeat to France.

Personal life

Viktor Gyökeres is of Hungarian descent through his paternal grandfather, who emigrated from Hungary to Sweden during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Because of this heritage, the Swedish-born striker has dual citizenship for Sweden and Hungary.

Away from football, Gyökeres began a relationship with Portuguese actress Inês Aguiar in 2024.
