What religion is Mika Godts?
Mika Godts is a Belgian professional footballer who chooses to keep his personal religious beliefs private. Following his transfer to Paris Saint-Germain in August 2026, reports surfaced online suggesting that the Belgian winger had embraced Islam. These rumors gained traction because he married his childhood sweetheart, Haifa Salem Ali, who is from Somalia, in a traditional Muslim wedding. It was also reported that he participated in fasting during Ramadan.
When directly asked in an interview if he had converted to Islam, Godts declined to confirm or deny it, stating:
“Whether I’ve converted to Islam? That’s private. I look at the world with an open mind. I find religions interesting and have studied them. There are many beautiful things in faith that you can apply to your own life.”
Mika Godts plays as a left winger for Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain and the Belgium national team. He is a product of the RSC Anderlecht and KRC Genk youth academies. In 2023, he joined the Dutch Eredivisie club Ajax, initially featuring for their youth side before breaking into the senior squad. Paris Saint-Germain then signed him in 2026 for a transfer worth €55 million. Before his move to PSG, Godts was crowned Johan Cruyff Talent of the Year 2025/26 during the Eredivisie Awards.
Early life
Born in Leuven, Godts began playing football at a young age. He began his youth development with local club KSC Grimbergen before being scouted by Anderlecht. He subsequently joined the Anderlecht youth academy to continue developing his skills. In 2020, he made a switch to join the youth setup at KRC Genk to complete his academy training.
Genk
Mika Godts moved quickly through Genk’s youth system into the club’s reserve side, Jong Genk. During the first half of the 2022–23 season, he played 19 matches for the reserve team and scored seven goals. He subsequently departed the club without making a senior first-team appearance for KRC Genk.
Ajax
On 31 January 2023, Ajax signed Godts from KRC Genk on a contract until June 2025, with Ajax paying a reported fee of €1 million plus a sell-on clause. He was initially placed with the club’s reserve team, Jong Ajax. He made an instant impact by scoring on his debut during a 4–2 win over MVV Maastricht. He made his senior Eredivisie debut on 9 April 2023 against Fortuna Sittard before earning gradual integration into the first-team squad over the subsequent two seasons.
His first full season as a professional came during the 2024–25 campaign. He put up strong numbers, finishing with eight goals and seven assists in 47 matches. This fine form included scoring three goals in the UEFA Europa League. To secure his future, he signed a contract extension that ties him to the club until June 2029.
Godts experienced a breakout campaign during the 2025–26 season, recording 17 goals and 15 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions. In doing so, he became only the third Ajax player since 2010 to register at least 15 goals and 15 assists in a single season. His performances earned him the league’s Young Player of the Year award and Ajax’s own Talent of the Year trophy. In total, he played 115 matches and scored 26 goals during his successful time with the club.
Paris Saint-Germain
On 15 August 2026, Paris Saint-Germain announced the signing of Godts from Ajax on a five-year contract. Ajax confirmed the transfer structure allowed the total fee to rise to a maximum of €55 million with performance-related add-ons.
International career
Godts represented Belgium across various youth tiers from under-15 to under-19 levels, which included appearing at the 2022 UEFA European Under-17 Championship at age 16. As he started to shine at Ajax, he actually turned down several call-ups to the Belgian under-21 team.
In March 2026, he received his first senior international call-up for friendly fixtures against the United States and Mexico. He made his official senior international debut on March 28, 2026, in an away match against the United States. However, he missed out on selection for Belgium’s final 2026 FIFA World Cup squad. By the time he completed his big transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, he had played two senior matches for his country.
