What religion is Anthony Gordon?
Anthony Gordon is an English professional footballer who has kept his personal religious views private, though he was raised in a Christian household in Liverpool. In an interview with Gary Neville on The Overlap, Gordon revealed how meditation helps him to cope with the pressure of playing football. He also talked about how seeing Mohamed Salah talk about visualisation helped him take more interest in it.
Anthony Gordon is a winger for the La Liga club Barcelona and the national team of England. On 29 May 2026, he completed a €70 million transfer from Newcastle United to Barcelona on a five-year contract.
In 2025, he won the EFL Cup with Newcastle and became the first player in the club’s history to score four goals in a single European match. Internationally, Gordon was part of England’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Early life
Anthony Michael Gordon was born on February 24, 2001, in Liverpool, Merseyside, to parents Keith and Nadine Gordon. He grew up in the Norris Green area and joined Liverpool’s youth academy and later joined Everton at the age of 11. He has Irish and Scottish eligibility through his family but has always committed his career to his country of birth. Gordon was educated at Alsop High School and Wade Deacon High School.
Club career
Gordon progressed through Everton’s academy from the under-12 level. He scored 16 times for the under-18s before he was subsequently named in Everton’s first-team squad for the Europa League match away to Apollon Limassol. A day later, he made his first-team debut in the fixture, coming on as an 88th-minute substitute in a 3–0 win.
He made his Premier League debut as a substitute against West Ham United on 18 January 2020 and signed a new five-year contract with Everton that September. The following year, in February 2021, Gordon joined Championship club Preston North End on loan for the remainder of the 2020–21 season before making a return to Goodison Park and established himself as a first-team regular. In total, he made 78 appearances for Everton, scoring seven goals.

Newcastle United
On 29 January 2023, Anthony Gordon leaves his academy club Everton to join Newcastle United on a long-term deal for a fee that could reportedly rise to £45 million. The transfer made him the club’s second most expensive signing at the time. Gordon recorded an assist for Sandro Tonali during his full competitive home debut at the start of the 2023–24 campaign, where he went on to score 11 Premier League goals and earn the Newcastle United Player of the Season award. In October 2024, he signed a long-term contract extension with the club.
His form continued to build over the following seasons. Gordon scored Newcastle’s second goal in the EFL Cup semi-finals against Arsenal and helped the club reach the final to lift their first major domestic trophy in 70 years. He also scored a Champions League hat-trick and became the third Newcastle player to score a hat trick in the Champions League and the first to do so in the knockout rounds.
Across the 2025-26 season he registered 17 goals in all competitions, including 10 in 12 Champions League matches, though Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League that season.
Barcelona
Barcelona and Newcastle United reached an agreement on a transfer fee in late May 2026, and Gordon completed a medical before the move was announced on 29 May. Barcelona signed him on a five-year contract, with the deal reported at a fee in the region of €70 million. Bayern Munich and Liverpool had also expressed interest before Barcelona moved to complete the deal, which was formally finalized on 1 July 2026 as Barcelona’s first signing of that summer’s transfer window.
International career
Gordon came through England’s youth pathway, earning caps at the Under-18, Under-19, and Under-20 levels before joining Lee Carsley’s Under-21 squad. He was a key member of the England Under-21 team that won the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in 2023.
Following his domestic performances, he received his first senior international call-up in March 2024 for friendly fixtures against Brazil and Belgium. That same month, he made his senior debut in a 1-0 defeat to Brazil at Wembley and was subsequently named in England’s squad for Euro 2024 but featured just once at the tournament, coming on as a 90th-minute substitute in the final group match against Slovenia.
On 17 November 2024, Gordon scored his first senior international goal in a 5–0 UEFA Nations League victory against the Republic of Ireland. He was named to England’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and made his tournament debut in England’s opening game against Croatia, which they won 4-2. Throughout the tournament, Gordon started six matches and scored his first World Cup goal against Argentina, helping England secure a third-place finish following a 6–4 playoff victory over France.

Gordon has been in a relationship with Annie Keating since childhood. Together, the couple welcomed their first child, a son, in November 2023.
