What religion is Pau Cubarsí?
Pau Cubarsí is a Spanish professional footballer who has not publicly discussed his religion. As a young player from Catalonia, he likely comes from a Catholic-influenced background, but he keeps personal matters private.
Pau Cubarsí plays for the La Liga club FC Barcelona and the Spain national team. With Barcelona, he won back-to-back La Liga titles, the Copa del Rey, and two Spanish Super Cups. Considered one of the best defenders of his generation, Cubarsí is the youngest center-back in football history to win the FIFA World Cup and the first defender ever to win the modern FIFA Young Player Award.
Pau Cubarsí has signed a contract extension with FC Barcelona’s first team in 2025 until June 2029. According to various sources, his base pay at Barcelona stands around €76,923 per week and €4.0 million per year. Under the agreement, Barcelona has set his buyout clause at a whopping €500 million.
Early life
Pau Cubarsí Paredes was born on 22 January 2007 in Bescanó, Girona, Catalonia. His parents are Robert Cubarsí and Gloria Paredes, and he has an older sister, Irene.
Cubarsí began playing football at Club Vilablareix in his hometown area before moving to the academy of Girona FC. In July 2018, at age eleven, he transferred to FC Barcelona’s La Masia academy. There, the central defender worked his way up through the ranks and became the third-youngest player, behind Lamine Yamal and Ilaix Moriba, to debut for Barcelona in the UEFA Youth League. In April 2023, he trained with the first team for the first time. Three months later, on 8 July 2023, he signed his first professional contract with the club.
Career
Cubarsí made his first-team debut on 18 January 2024, replacing an injured Andreas Christensen at half-time in a 3–1 Copa del Rey win away at Unionistas de Salamanca in the round of 16. In his 45 minutes of action, he set up Jules Koundé for an assist. Three days later, the day before his 17th birthday, he made his La Liga debut as a starter away at Real Betis.
On 12 March 2024, he made his Champions League debut in the second leg of a last-16 tie against Napoli. At the age of 17 years, 1 month, and 20 days, he became the youngest defender ever to represent Barça in the Champions League and was named UEFA’s Player of the Match. Subsequently, he made 24 appearances for the senior team in the second half of the 2023-24 season.
In the 2024–25 season, Cubarsí remained a first-team mainstay after Hansi Flick took over as head coach. This time again, he made 56 appearances that season, in which he claimed his first honors as a Blaugrana, winning the Spanish Super Cup, the Copa del Rey, and the league.
He continued as an undisputed starter into the 2025-26 season and helped Barcelona beat Real Madrid 3-2 in the Spanish Super Cup final on 11 January 2026 after Raphinha scored twice. The following month, on 16 February 2026, Cubarsí scored his first-ever La Liga goal, netting Barcelona’s 100th goal of the campaign in a match the team ultimately lost 1-2 to Girona. On 10 May 2026, he helped Barcelona beat Real Madrid 2-0 at home in El Clásico to secure back-to-back La Liga titles for Barcelona, with goals from Marcus Rashford and Ferran Torres.
Prior to the 2026 World Cup, Cubarsi had already surpassed 120 official first-team appearances for Barcelona and was the second youngest player after Lamine Yamal to reach 100 appearances for the club.

International career
Cubarsí represented Spain from the under-15 through the under-23 levels, and he was a starting center-back on the Spain under-17 team that won the Algarve Cup in 2023. The following year, in March 2024, he received his first senior call-up and made his senior debut for Spain as a substitute in a friendly against Colombia and became the youngest defender ever to debut for the national team. On 5 June 2024, Cubarsí provided an assist in a 5–0 win over Andorra. He became, at the time, the second-youngest player since 2004 to record an assist for Spain, behind only Lamine Yamal.
He was included in Spain’s preliminary squad for UEFA Euro 2024 but was left out of the final squad announced on 7 June 2024. He was subsequently selected for Spain’s Under-23 squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics and won a gold medal with that squad. Later on, he was an unused substitute in the 2025 UEFA Nations League final on 9 June 2025, in which Spain lost to Portugal on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
In May 2026, Cubarsí was named in Spain’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He started in Spain’s opening two group matches and went on to start at center-back throughout the tournament, including the quarter-final, semi-final, and the final against Argentina.
